Saturn’s Moon Titan May Have Methane-Based Life

Something is consuming hydrogen and organic molecules on Saturn’s moon Titan, and the recipe matches astrobiologists’ theories about possible methane-based life. Granted, there may be other chemical explanations — it’s just that no one knows what they are yet.

New data from the Cassini spacecraft show hydrogen is disappearing near Titan’s surface. What’s more, scientists have not been able to find acetylene, an organic molecule that should be pretty abundant in the moon’s thick atmosphere.

Over 100 Earth-Like Planets Have Been Discovered in Last Few Weeks

NASA Earth from Space

More than 100 Earth-like planets have been discovered in the past few weeks by the space telescope “Kepler.”

Kepler was launched in January of last year and has been scanning space for planets orbiting stars ever since.

Most scientists now believe that there are around 100,000 planets in our galaxy alone that could harbour life.

Confirmed: UK Climate Scientists Manipulated Data to Exaggerate Global Warming

GlaciersThe Moscow-based Institute of Economic Analysis (IEA) issued a report stating that Russian meteorological-station data does not appear to substantiate the anthropogenic global-warming theory; contrary to the manipulated impression given by UK researchers involved in Climategate.

Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country’s territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports. Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.

The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

The HadCRUT database includes specific stations providing incomplete data and highlighting the global-warming process, rather than stations facilitating uninterrupted observations.

NASA Finds Water on the Moon

Moon (Last quarter)NASA said Friday it had discovered water on the moon, opening “a new chapter” that could allow for the development of a lunar space station.

The discovery was announced by project scientist Anthony Colaprete at a midday news conference.

Cellphone Use Linked to Brain Cancer

New Motorola Android Phone - DEXTLong-term mobile phone users could face a higher risk of developing cancer in later life, according to a decade-long study.

The report, to be published later this year, has reportedly found that heavy mobile use is linked to brain tumours.

The survey of 12,800 people in 13 countries has been overseen by the World Health Organisation.

University of Colorado Team Finds Evidence of Ancient Lake on Mars

Mars the Red PlanetA University of Colorado at Boulder research team has discovered the first definitive evidence of shorelines on Mars, an indication of a deep, ancient lake there and a finding with implications for the discovery of past life on the Red Planet.

Estimated to be more than 3 billion years old, the lake appears to have covered as much as 80 square miles and was up to 1,500 feet deep — roughly the equivalent of Lake Champlain bordering the United States and Canada, said CU-Boulder Research Associate Gaetano Di Achille, who led the study.  The shoreline evidence, found along a broad delta, included a series of alternating ridges and troughs thought to be surviving remnants of beach deposits.

“This is the first unambiguous evidence of shorelines on the surface of Mars,” said Di Achille.  “The identification of the shorelines and accompanying geological evidence allows us to calculate the size and volume of the lake, which appears to have formed about 3.4 billion years ago.”

Military Hush-Up: Incoming Space Rocks Classified

asteroidFor 15 years, scientists have benefited from data gleaned by U.S. classified satellites of natural fireball events in Earth’s atmosphere – but no longer.

A recent U.S. military policy decision now explicitly states that observations by hush-hush government spacecraft of incoming bolides and fireballs are classified secret and are not to be released, SPACE.com has learned.

NASA Proves Sun Responsible For Global Warming

P1040698Some researchers believe that the solar cycle influences global climate changes.  They attribute recent warming trends to cyclic variation. Skeptics, though, argue that there’s little hard evidence of a solar hand in recent climate changes.

Now, a new research report from a surprising source may help to lay this skepticism to rest.  A study from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland looking at climate data over the past century has concluded that solar variation has made a significant impact on the Earth’s climate.  The report concludes that evidence for climate changes based on solar radiation can be traced back as far as the Industrial Revolution.

Past research has shown that the sun goes through eleven year cycles. At the cycle’s peak, solar activity occurring near sunspots is particularly intense, basking the Earth in solar heat.  According to Robert Cahalan, a climatologist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, “Right now, we are in between major ice ages, in a period that has been called the Holocene.”
